There are different types of shamanic amulets. There are protective ones, dreamcatchers, ones to attract money, etc. They all differ in their appearance, the material they’re made out of and their sizes. However, all amulets are used for the same purpose — to attract a certain power or repel any destructive forces. What are amulets made out of? First and foremost an amulet is a “house for spirits”.
In order to clarify what this means, let’s try to imagine what the surrounding world looks like to a shaman. A shaman perceives the world around him as alive. This means he approaches reality with the understanding that everything in it is alive: people, plants, animals. This isn’t the same as when we think “we like animals and we consider them to be living beings.” A shaman sees the living soul inside of everything and respects it just as much as a human being. Also, shamans see that there are spirits that don’t have a physical embodiment, for example, the spirit of luck, the spirit of a city, the spirit of a house.
There are so many different spirits living in the world around us. And each one has its own specialization. The spirit of luck, for example is a spirit that flies up and down and helps people self-realize. If a person is having problems with their affairs, he can ask for the spirit of luck, who will help him get rid of the obstacles on his path. The spirit of luck is a spirit that doesn’t have a physical embodiment. It’s not a cat, who has a body, it’s a being, like a house spirit, who cohabits a space with people. But it’s important to give the spirit a special house, because otherwise, if you want to call on the spirit, you’ll have to wait for hours before it comes, or call on another spirit to do the job. And if you call another spirit, then you’d have to explain to him from the beginning what needs to be done and this can cause all sorts of chaos and misunderstanding!
All of the spirits are different. Recall the story about Aladdin and the magic lamp. The genie was a spirit who lived in a lamp and could fulfill any of its master’s wishes. This is probably every person’s dream — to have a personal genie that can do anything and everything. But the truth of the matter is that spirits that don’t have a physical form are actually limited in the things they can do. There are clear distinctions in shamanism. There are home spirits — they live in your home and protect it. There are protective spirits — they live in an amulet or a crystal. In the times when religions were just being formed, these protector-spirits would be put into the crosses or other religious objects and hung around the neck. So when you wore the object around your neck, the spirit was always with you. That’s why these types of amulets should be worn constantly and not be taken off. It’s because they serve to protect the person wearing them from all misfortune and bad luck. If it’s another type of spirit, like the spirit of luck, it should be housed in a form that is more accommodating to its nature. Every spirit has its own specialization and so every spirit is given a home in the form of an object that best suits that spirit’s character.
Also, according to tradition, the home for the spirit should be made out of natural materials. A spirit won’t like to be housed in plastic beads or earrings. Spirits have the same exact character as consciousness. Their reaction to you is based on how they are treated. Try feeding a house spirit with say a Snickers, and he will be very offended! He’ll start hiding things around the house, or your food will get burned, etc. This is how he will express his discontentment, because a house spirit prefers natural food — fresh-baked bread, or some pancakes that you prepared yourself. And then as a sign of gratitude, the house spirit will make sure that your home is cozy, clean, organized and that there is plenty of fresh air and a feeling of lightness about it.
And so, what are the important things that you need to know for creating or acquiring an amulet? Spirits that live in the amulets prefer natural materials. The materials should be taken from place of power, with the permission of the spirit that lives there. Don’t rip off, tear off, or break off any part of nature. If the spirit of the place permits it, he will help you find what you need. If you like a certain material (like rocks, metal, leather, bone or wood), choose the material for your amulet based on your preference.
